Saturn return: what it is, when yours happens and how to get through it

Around your 29th birthday, Saturn comes back to where it was when you were born. Why that period feels so heavy, how to find your dates, and how to come out stronger.

Saturn return: what it is, when yours happens and how to get through it

Your Saturn return is the moment Saturn comes back to the exact spot it occupied when you were born. It happens for the first time in your late twenties, again in your late fifties, and, for some, in your late eighties. Few astrological cycles have such a reputation, and few are so widely felt, even by people who have never looked at a chart.

This guide explains what a Saturn return is, why it lands when it does, who is going through one right now, and how to move through it with less fear and more intention.

Why around 29?

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to travel once around the Sun, and so once around the zodiac as seen from Earth. NASA's Saturn overview gives the astronomy: a slow, distant planet that spends roughly two and a half years in each sign.

That slowness is the whole point. When Saturn returns to its natal position, it closes the first full chapter of your life. The usual windows are:

  • First return: about ages 27 to 30
  • Second return: about ages 56 to 60
  • Third return: about ages 85 to 89

Because Saturn moves backwards and forwards (it is retrograde for about four and a half months every year), it often crosses your natal degree three times over roughly a year. The whole "return season" can stretch to two or three years if you count the approach.

What a Saturn return feels like

Saturn is the planet of structure, time, responsibility and consequences. In astrology it is the teacher who does not hand out marks for effort, only for what is real. During your return, anything built on the wrong foundation tends to wobble:

  • Work that was never yours. Careers chosen to please others often come into question.
  • Relationships that ran on habit. Some deepen into commitment, some end.
  • Where you live. Moves, leaving home for real, or finally putting down roots.
  • Your own authority. Many people stop waiting for permission and start acting like adults on their own terms.

It is not a curse. The second half of the story, the part people talk about less, is that what you build during a Saturn return tends to last. Commitments made in these years often hold for decades.

Saturn takes away what does not fit you and leaves you with what does. It just does not ask first.

Who is having a Saturn return in 2026?

Saturn moved into Aries in February 2026 and stays there until April 2028. Anyone born with Saturn in Aries is now meeting it again:

Born roughlySaturn in your chartReturn
April 1996 – June 1998, and late 1998 – early 1999Ariesfirst Saturn return, 2026–2028
March 1967 – April 1969Ariessecond Saturn return, 2026–2028

If you were born from about 1993 to early 1996, Saturn was in Pisces at your birth, and your first return happened between 2023 and early 2026. You are in the after-phase now: the time to build on what it showed you.

The exact degree matters. Two people born a year apart can have their return many months apart. To see your own natal Saturn, draw a free birth chart and look for the ♄ symbol.

What Saturn in Aries asks for

Every return takes the colour of the sign your Saturn sits in. Aries is the sign of beginnings, courage and self-direction. People with Saturn in Aries often grow up learning to hold back, wait their turn or ask permission. Their return tends to ask the opposite:

  • Start the thing you have been rehearsing in your head.
  • Lead, even if nobody has appointed you.
  • Learn to act without needing to win every time.

How to get through your Saturn return

1. Take stock honestly

Make two lists: what in your life you chose, and what you drifted into. Saturn is kinder to people who do this voluntarily.

2. Commit to fewer, bigger things

Saturn rewards depth over range. One serious project, one serious skill, one serious relationship will carry you further than ten half-hearted ones.

3. Expect some endings

Not everything needs to be saved. Letting something go at the right time is also a Saturn skill.

4. Build routines, not resolutions

Saturn is time itself. Habits you repeat for the next two years matter more than any big decision you make in a single week.

5. Find out where it lands

The house Saturn returns to tells you which area of life is being restructured: work, home, love, health, money. That is where your effort pays off most.

The second Saturn return

The return in your late fifties is quieter but just as real. It often marks a shift from proving yourself to passing something on: mentoring, simplifying, deciding what you want your later years to be about. People who use it well often describe it as a second adulthood.

Frequently asked questions

At what age is the Saturn return?

The first Saturn return happens between about 27 and 30, most exactly around 29. The second comes at roughly 56 to 60, and the third at about 85 to 89.

How long does a Saturn return last?

Saturn usually crosses its natal degree up to three times within about a year, because of its retrograde loops. Counting the approach and the aftermath, the whole season often feels like two to three years.

Can a Saturn return be positive?

Very much so. It is one of the most common times for people to commit to a partner, a career or a place. What feels like pressure is often the push to build something real.
