What a 12-month reading is built from
There is no single "forecast chart". A year is read by laying several layers over your birth chart, and a good reading says clearly which one it is using.
1. Transits: today's sky over your chart
A transit is a planet currently moving through the zodiac, touching a point in your natal chart. Fast planets (the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars) set the month's weather. Slow planets (Jupiter, Saturn, and beyond) set the climate of the year. Over twelve months the slow ones matter most, because they stay in contact with one place in your chart for weeks or months, and often touch it three times when they turn retrograde.
2. The solar return: the chart for your year
Once a year the Sun comes back to the exact degree it held when you were born, close to your birthday. The chart drawn for that moment is called a solar return, and astrologers read it as the theme of the year ahead: which houses are lit up, which sign rises, where the Moon sits. 3. Progressions: how your chart has matured
In secondary progressions, one day after birth stands for one year of life. The progressed Sun, Moon and Rising sign move slowly through your chart and mark long chapters rather than single events. The progressed Moon, for example, changes sign roughly every two to two and a half years.
4. Your personal year number
Numerology gives a lighter layer: a number from 1 to 9 that sets the tone of the year. Add your birth day, your birth month and the digits of the year, and reduce to a single digit. A few notes on these.
- Mercury rules messages, contracts, travel and machines, so its retrogrades are traditionally a time to review rather than launch. The current one is covered in Mercury retrograde in October 2026.
- Jupiter is the planet of growth and opportunity, so the house it crosses in your chart is where the year offers the most room. Its move into Virgo is covered in Jupiter in Virgo 2027.

- Eclipses are read as turning points, strongest for people with a planet or angle near the eclipse degree.
None of these means the same thing for two people. The dates are the same; the house they land in is not. That is the entire reason to read a year through your own chart.
