Life path number: how to calculate yours, and what each number means

The single number your whole birth date reduces to. How to calculate your life path number by hand, what master numbers are, and what each number says about you.

Life path number: how to calculate yours, and what each number means

Your life path number is the single digit (or master number) that your full date of birth reduces to. In numerology it is the most important number you have: a short description of your natural direction, your strengths and the lesson that keeps coming back.

This guide shows you how to calculate your life path number by hand in three steps, with worked examples, explains master numbers, and gives a plain meaning for each number from 1 to 9, 11, 22 and 33. If you would rather skip the arithmetic, the free core number tool does it for you.

How to calculate your life path number

The most widely used method reduces the month, the day and the year separately, then adds them together.

  1. Reduce the month to a single digit (or keep 11).
  2. Reduce the day to a single digit (or keep 11 or 22).
  3. Reduce the year to a single digit (or keep 11, 22 or 33).
  4. Add the three results and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 or 33 if they appear.

"Reduce" simply means adding the digits together until one digit is left: 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.

Example 1: 15 March 1990

  • Month: March = 3
  • Day: 15 → 1 + 5 = 6
  • Year: 1990 → 19 → 10 → 1
  • Total: 3 + 6 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1

Life path number 1.

Example 2: 29 November 1987

  • Month: November = 11 (a master number, so it stays)
  • Day: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 (stays)
  • Year: 1987 → 25 → 7
  • Total: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11

Why methods sometimes disagree

Some numerologists add every digit of the date in one go instead. Most of the time the answer is the same, but master numbers can appear or disappear. 4 April 1996 gives 6 with the method above and 33 if you add all the digits at once. Neither is wrong; they are different schools. We use the three-part method because it respects each component of the date.

What are master numbers?

11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers because they carry a stronger, more demanding version of the number they reduce to (2, 4 and 6). People with a master number often describe a sense of a bigger task, and a matching pressure. A life path 11 is a 2 with the volume turned up.

The history of numerology is long and varied, from Pythagorean ideas about number to the modern systems most people use today. Treat these meanings as a mirror for reflection, not a verdict.

What each life path number means

Life path 1: the initiator

Independent, driven, original. Ones are here to start things and learn to stand on their own. Blind spot: going it alone even when help would make it easier.

Life path 2: the partner

Sensitive, diplomatic, attuned to other people. Twos bring people together and notice what others miss. Blind spot: disappearing into keeping the peace.

Life path 3: the expresser

Creative, social, verbal. Threes need an outlet: writing, speaking, making, performing. Blind spot: scattering talent across too many things.

Life path 4: the builder

Reliable, practical, steady. Fours build things that last, from careers to families. Blind spot: rigidity, and mistaking control for safety.

Life path 5: the explorer

Curious, adaptable, restless. Fives learn by experience and need freedom to move. Blind spot: leaving just before things get deep.

Life path 6: the carer

Responsible, loving, devoted to home and community. Sixes take care of others naturally. Blind spot: over-giving, then resenting it.

Life path 7: the seeker

Analytical, private, spiritual. Sevens look beneath the surface and need time alone to think. Blind spot: trusting the mind and doubting everyone else.

Life path 8: the achiever

Ambitious, capable, focused on results. Eights handle power, money and responsibility. Blind spot: measuring self-worth by success.

Life path 9: the humanitarian

Compassionate, wise, idealistic. Nines care about the bigger picture and often help others let go. Blind spot: struggling with their own endings.

Life path 11: the intuitive

Inspired, sensitive, sometimes anxious. Elevens often act as messengers or guides. Blind spot: nervous tension when intuition is ignored.

Life path 22: the master builder

Visionary and practical at once. Twenty-twos can turn big ideas into real structures. Blind spot: the weight of their own expectations.

Life path 33: the master teacher

Rare and deeply caring, focused on healing and teaching. Blind spot: carrying everyone else's burdens.

Frequently asked questions

What is the rarest life path number?

Master number 33 is the rarest, because the date has to add up in a very particular way. Among the single digits, the distribution is fairly even.

Is the life path number the same as the destiny number?

No. The life path number comes from your date of birth. The destiny or expression number comes from the letters of your full birth name.

Can your life path number change?

No. Your birth date does not change, so neither does your life path number. What changes is how you live it, from its blind spot towards its strength.
