Personal year number: how to find yours and what each year means
Your personal year is a number from 1 to 9 that sets the tone of the year. How to calculate it, a lookup table for 2026 and 2027, and what each one means for love, work and money.

In numerology, every year has a number for you, and it is not the year on the calendar. Your personal year number runs from 1 to 9 and sets the tone of the twelve months you are in: whether it is a year to begin, build, or let go. Nine years make a cycle, and then it starts again at 1.
This guide shows you how to calculate it in under a minute, gives a lookup table for 2026 and 2027, and explains what each number asks of you in love, work and money.
How to calculate your personal year
Add three things and reduce the result to a single digit.
- The day you were born, reduced to one digit.
- The month you were born, as a number (January is 1, December is 12), reduced to one digit.
- The year you are in, with its digits added and reduced to one digit.
Worked example. Born on 14 March, calculated for 2026:
- Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
- Month: March → 3
- Year: 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
- Total: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9
So this person is in a personal year 9.
A second example with larger numbers. Born on 29 November, for 2026:
- Day: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2
- Month: November → 11 → 1 + 1 = 2
- Year: 2026 → 1
- Total: 2 + 2 + 1 = 5
If the total is more than one digit, add its digits again until you have one. Some numerologists keep 11 and 22 as master numbers in the final result, but for a personal year the single digit is the usual reading.
Quick lookup for 2026 and 2027
First, reduce your birth day and month to one digit: add the reduced day and the reduced month, and reduce again. Then use the table.
| Your day + month number | Personal year in 2026 | Personal year in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 |
| 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 5 | 6 | 7 |
| 6 | 7 | 8 |
| 7 | 8 | 9 |
| 8 | 9 | 1 |
| 9 | 1 | 2 |
For 14 March: 5 + 3 = 8, so 2026 is a 9 and 2027 is a 1. A new cycle begins.
When does your personal year change?
There are two conventions. Many numerologists change the number on 1 January. Others, including the free personal year tool on this site, count from your birthday, because the cycle belongs to you and not to the calendar. If your birthday is in March, then in January and February you are still in the previous number. Pick one and stay with it.
Personal months and days
Once you know your year, you can go finer. Your personal month is your personal year plus the calendar month number, reduced to one digit. In a personal year 9, March (3) gives 9 + 3 = 12 → 3. It is a lighter layer, useful for choosing when to start or finish things.
What each personal year means
| Year | Theme | Do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beginnings | Start, decide, take initiative | Waiting to feel ready |
| 2 | Patience and partnership | Cooperate, listen, build slowly | Forcing results |
| 3 | Expression | Create, socialise, be visible | Scattering your energy |
| 4 | Foundations | Build systems, work steadily, plan | Cutting corners |
| 5 | Change | Travel, experiment, stay flexible | Impulsive commitments |
| 6 | Responsibility and care | Look after home, family, love | Over-giving |
| 7 | Reflection | Study, rest, review, go inward | Pushing launches |
| 8 | Power and results | Lead, earn, act with authority | Control and overwork |
| 9 | Completion | Release, forgive, tidy up | Starting big new things |
Love, work and money in each year
1. Love: you meet people or begin something. Work: new role or venture. Money: invest in a start.
2. Love: depth and patience; one relationship matters most. Work: collaboration, small steps. Money: slow, steady.
3. Love: social and playful. Work: visibility, creative projects, communication. Money: income from expression, but easy to spend.
4. Love: commitment, practical care. Work: hard but productive. Money: saving, structure, long-term plans.
5. Love: change and surprise; commitment may feel tight. Work: new directions, travel, freedom. Money: fluctuating, so keep reserves.
6. Love: family, commitment, caring for others. Work: service, teaching, responsibility. Money: household and shared needs.
7. Love: quiet; time alone matters. Work: research, strategy, skill-building. Money: keep it simple, avoid speculation.
8. Love: strong partners and clear expectations. Work: promotion, authority, recognition. Money: the year money moves most, in both directions.
9. Love: endings and forgiveness. Work: finish projects, hand over, prepare for a new cycle. Money: clear debts and old commitments.
Master numbers and the 9-year cycle
A year 9 is followed by a year 1, so a cycle of nine years is a full story: begin (1), partner (2), express (3), build (4), change (5), care (6), reflect (7), harvest (8), release (9). Knowing where you are tells you whether to plant or harvest. If you are in a 9, it is wise to finish rather than start, because a 1 follows and rewards a clean slate.
How it fits with your birth chart
Numerology gives the tone, and your birth chart shows where in your life it lands. A year 5 with a busy house of travel or work feels different from a year 5 with a quiet one. For the planetary side of the year, see our guides to your solar return and the free 12-month birth chart.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong year. Use the year you are in, not your birth year.
- Mixing conventions. Pick calendar year or birthday-to-birthday and stay with it.
- Reading the number alone. One digit cannot describe a year.
- Using it as a rule. Treat it as a question to ask: what is this year for?
Frequently asked questions
What is a personal year number?
A number from 1 to 9 calculated from your birth day, birth month and the current year, used in numerology to describe the theme of your year.
Is a personal year the same as my life path number?
No. Your life path number is calculated from your full birth date and stays the same for life. Your personal year changes every year. See our guide on the life path number.
What if my total is 11 or 22?
Master numbers 11 and 22 are sometimes kept at the final step, but for a personal year most people reduce to a single digit and note the master number as an extra intensity.
What is a personal year 1 like?
A fresh start. It is a year to begin, decide and take initiative.
What is a personal year 9 like?
A completion year, for letting go of what has run its course and clearing space for the next cycle.
Can I have a bad personal year?
No year is bad. Some are heavier (4, 8), some lighter (3, 5), and some quiet (2, 7). Each has a use.
Does numerology predict the future?
No. It describes themes and timing, and it is best used as a prompt for reflection, not as a prediction.
How is a personal year different from an astrology forecast?
Numerology uses numbers from your date; astrology uses planetary positions over your chart. They are separate systems and can be read side by side.
Where a personal reading goes further
A number gives the tone of a year in one digit. It cannot tell you which month to push or wait, where the retrogrades land in your chart, or how the year connects to the decision you are weighing now. That takes your actual chart.
The Annual Personal Algorithm is built for exactly that: your year, month by month, computed from your birth data and read and signed by Mr. Tanker, with the personal year number as one of its layers rather than the whole story.
