Your big three, explained.
What the big three are
The Sun is who you are becoming, the Moon is what you need, and the Rising sign is how you arrive. Together they describe a person far better than the Sun sign alone, and they explain why two people born in the same month can feel nothing alike.
Read them as a short sentence: the Sun is the subject, the Moon the feeling, the Rising sign the manner.
What you need to calculate them
The Sun needs only your birth date. The Moon usually needs the date, and the time only if it changed sign that day. The Rising sign always needs the exact time and place, because it changes about every two hours.
| Sign | As your Sun | As your Moon | As your Rising sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Initiates, direct, brave | Needs action; restless when stalled | Bold, direct, energetic |
| Taurus | Steady, builds, loyal | Needs comfort, routine, security | Calm, grounded, sensory |
| Gemini | Curious, adaptable, communicative | Needs conversation and variety | Quick, witty, light |
| Cancer | Protective, intuitive, caring | Needs safety, home, belonging | Gentle, guarded, warm |
| Leo | Warm, creative, wants to be seen | Needs appreciation, play, loyalty | Magnetic, expressive, confident |
| Virgo | Precise, useful, improving | Needs order and useful work | Modest, observant, tidy |
| Libra | Fair, relational, harmonising | Needs harmony, company, beauty | Graceful, polite, diplomatic |
| Scorpio | Intense, private, transformative | Needs depth, trust, emotional truth | Magnetic, reserved, perceptive |
| Sagittarius | Free, seeking meaning, honest | Needs freedom, adventure, optimism | Open, jovial, restless |
| Capricorn | Disciplined, ambitious, responsible | Needs structure, achievement, control | Serious, composed, capable |
| Aquarius | Independent, original, idealistic | Needs space, friendship, ideas | Distinct, cool, unconventional |
| Pisces | Imaginative, empathic, porous | Needs quiet, art, retreat | Soft, dreamy, adaptable |

Questions
What are the big three in astrology?
Your Sun, Moon and Rising sign: your core identity, your emotional needs and the way you meet the world.
Which of the big three matters most?
None. People identify with the Sun, feel known by the Moon and are recognised by the Rising sign. A reading uses all three.
Can I get my big three without a birth time?
You can get your Sun and usually your Moon. The Rising sign needs the time.
What comes after the big three?
Mercury, Venus and Mars, then the houses and aspects. The full chart below shows all of them.
How it's calculated
Real astronomy, shown honestly.
- Planets
- Computed from published orbital theory (Schlyter for the planets, Meeus for the Moon) and checked against a scientific ephemeris on 1,500 dates: every body within 0.06°, the Moon within 0.01°. In a side-by-side check with a Swiss Ephemeris calculator, all positions agreed within about 2′ and every house placement matched.
- Time
- Your local clock time becomes Universal Time through the full historical time-zone database, including daylight saving and old local times, such as Amsterdam Mean Time before 1940. The moment we used is shown above the chart.
- Houses
- Placidus by default, Whole Sign if you prefer. Placidus is undefined near the poles; there the chart switches to Porphyry and says so.
- Points
- True lunar node, mean Black Moon Lilith, Part of Fortune (Ascendant + Moon − Sun) and Part of Spirit, and the Vertex.
- Chiron and asteroids
- Chiron, Pholus, Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta and Eros come from NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris for 1900–2030, stored as one small table and interpolated in your browser to within 1.5″ of Horizons itself.
- Privacy
- Your date and time of birth stay in your browser. Only the place name you type is sent, through our server, to the OpenStreetMap search (Photon); your IP never reaches them. The asteroid table is the same file for everyone, so loading it says nothing about you.
