Your Moon sign, explained.
What a Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Where the Sun describes who you are becoming, the Moon describes what you need: what makes you feel safe, how you react under stress and what you do for comfort.
Many people find their Moon sign describes them in private more accurately than their Sun sign does.
Do I need my birth time?
Usually not. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and spends roughly two and a half days in each sign, so on most days it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight.
If the Moon changed sign on your birthday, the time decides it. Without a time this calculator shows both possible signs instead of guessing.

Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?
Usually yes. Only if the Moon changed sign on your birthday do you need the time; the calculator tells you when that is the case.

Is my Moon sign more important than my Sun sign?
Neither is more important. The Sun is identity and purpose, the Moon is needs and instinct. A reading uses both, with the Rising sign.

The Moon is computed from published lunar theory and checked against a scientific ephemeris to within 0.01 degrees.

- Planets
- Computed from published orbital theory (Schlyter for the planets, Meeus for the Moon) and checked against a scientific ephemeris on 1,500 dates: every body within 0.06°, the Moon within 0.01°. In a side-by-side check with a Swiss Ephemeris calculator, all positions agreed within about 2′ and every house placement matched.
- Time
- Your local clock time becomes Universal Time through the full historical time-zone database, including daylight saving and old local times, such as Amsterdam Mean Time before 1940. The moment we used is shown above the chart.
- Houses
- Placidus by default, Whole Sign if you prefer. Placidus is undefined near the poles; there the chart switches to Porphyry and says so.
- Points
- True lunar node, mean Black Moon Lilith, Part of Fortune (Ascendant + Moon − Sun) and Part of Spirit, and the Vertex.
- Chiron and asteroids
- Chiron, Pholus, Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta and Eros come from NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris for 1900–2030, stored as one small table and interpolated in your browser to within 1.5″ of Horizons itself.
- Privacy
- Your date and time of birth stay in your browser. Only the place name you type is sent, through our server, to the OpenStreetMap search (Photon); your IP never reaches them. The asteroid table is the same file for everyone, so loading it says nothing about you.
