Your Rising sign, explained.

What a Rising sign is

Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. It describes how you come across: first impressions, your style, and the way you start new things.

It also sets the twelve houses of your chart, so it decides where in your life each planet acts. That is why astrologers treat it as one of the three most important points, with your Sun and Moon.

Why the birth time matters

The horizon turns through all twelve signs in about 24 hours, so on average a new sign rises roughly every two hours, and the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. A birth time that is off by half an hour can change your Rising sign.

Your birth certificate often records the time; parents and hospital records are the next places to look. Without a time this calculator still gives your Sun and Moon, and says plainly that the Rising sign stays open.

Questions

How do I find my Rising sign?

Enter your date, exact time and place of birth above. The calculator converts your local time to Universal Time with the historical time-zone database and finds the sign on the eastern horizon at that minute.

Can I find my Rising sign without a birth time?

No. The Rising sign changes about every two hours, so it cannot be calculated without the time. Your Sun and Moon signs can still be found.

Is the Rising sign the same as the Ascendant?

Yes. "Rising sign" and "Ascendant" are two names for the same point.

Why does my Rising sign feel more like me than my Sun sign?

The Rising sign is how you meet the world, so it is often what other people notice first and what you show in new situations.

Which house system does it use?

Placidus by default, with Whole Sign available. The Rising sign is the same in both; the houses differ.

How it's calculated

Real astronomy, shown honestly.

Planets
Computed from published orbital theory (Schlyter for the planets, Meeus for the Moon) and checked against a scientific ephemeris on 1,500 dates: every body within 0.06°, the Moon within 0.01°. In a side-by-side check with a Swiss Ephemeris calculator, all positions agreed within about 2′ and every house placement matched.
Time
Your local clock time becomes Universal Time through the full historical time-zone database, including daylight saving and old local times, such as Amsterdam Mean Time before 1940. The moment we used is shown above the chart.
Houses
Placidus by default, Whole Sign if you prefer. Placidus is undefined near the poles; there the chart switches to Porphyry and says so.
Points
True lunar node, mean Black Moon Lilith, Part of Fortune (Ascendant + Moon − Sun) and Part of Spirit, and the Vertex.
Chiron and asteroids
Chiron, Pholus, Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta and Eros come from NASA JPL's Horizons ephemeris for 1900–2030, stored as one small table and interpolated in your browser to within 1.5″ of Horizons itself.
Privacy
Your date and time of birth stay in your browser. Only the place name you type is sent, through our server, to the OpenStreetMap search (Photon); your IP never reaches them. The asteroid table is the same file for everyone, so loading it says nothing about you.
