The total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027: where to see it and what it means for your chart
On 2 August 2027 the Moon covers the Sun for up to 6 minutes 23 seconds, the longest totality over land until 2114. The path, how to watch safely, and what the eclipse at 9°55′ Leo means for your chart.

On 2 August 2027 the Moon passes exactly in front of the Sun and day turns to night along a narrow band from southern Spain to North Africa and the Middle East. At its longest, near Luxor in Egypt, totality lasts about 6 minutes 23 seconds. No total solar eclipse seen from land between 1991 and 2114 lasts longer.
This guide covers both sides of the event: where and how to see it, and what astrologers read in it. The eclipse falls at 9°55′ Leo, and you will find which part of your chart it touches below.
The facts at a glance
| Date | Monday 2 August 2027 |
| Type | Total solar eclipse |
| Longest totality | About 6 min 22–23 s, near Luxor, Egypt |
| Width of the shadow | About 258 km at its widest |
| New Moon (exact) | 10:05 UTC |
| Position | 9°55′ Leo |
The time and position of the New Moon come from the same planetary ephemeris that draws the free birth chart on this site. The duration and path figures are from published eclipse calculations (see the sources at the end); sources differ by a second or two.
Where totality falls
The Moon's full shadow crosses, from west to east:
- Southern Spain: parts of the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga. At Tarifa, the southern tip of Spain, totality lasts about 4 minutes 39 seconds.
- Gibraltar
- North Africa: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, where totality is longest.
- The Middle East and the Horn of Africa: Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia.
Outside that band the eclipse is partial: much of Europe, Africa and western Asia sees part of the Sun covered, but the sky does not go dark. Only inside the path do you see the corona, the pale crown of the Sun's outer atmosphere.
Local times depend on exactly where you stand. For your town, use a dedicated eclipse calculator such as the national astronomy observatory of your country or timeanddate.com, and check again close to the date.
How to watch it safely
- Never look at the Sun directly during the partial phases, not even when most of it is covered.
- Use certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) or a solar filter that covers the front of binoculars, a camera or a telescope. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
- Only during totality, when the Sun is completely covered, is it safe to take the glasses off. Put them back on the moment the first bright edge of the Sun returns.
- A pinhole projector, or the dappled light under a tree, shows the crescent Sun safely on the ground.
If you plan to travel into the path, book early. Long totality and good summer weather in southern Spain and Egypt are expected to draw large crowds.
What a solar eclipse means in astrology
A solar eclipse is a New Moon with extra weight. The Sun and Moon meet in the same degree, as they do every month, but close enough to the lunar nodes that the Moon blocks the light. Astrologers read eclipses as turning points: beginnings that arrive with some force, often in the part of life where the eclipse falls in your chart, and often unfolding over the following six months or so.
A total eclipse is traditionally given more weight than a partial one. That says nothing about good or bad. It is a reset button, and what you do with it is yours.
Why Leo matters here
Leo is the sign of self-expression, creativity, confidence, love and being seen. An eclipse in Leo puts those themes under a spotlight:
- Visibility. Where are you hiding work, talent or feelings that are ready to be seen?
- Creativity. Projects, children, romance, play: the things you make because they are yours.
- Leadership. Taking the centre of a situation, with warmth rather than ego.
- Recognition. The honest question behind it: what are you doing for applause, and what are you doing because it is truly yours?
Which house of your chart does it touch?
Planets and eclipses act through the houses of your chart. The simple way to find where 9°55′ Leo falls for you is by your Rising sign (whole sign houses):
| Your Rising sign | Leo is your... | The eclipse lights up |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th house | Creativity, romance, children, play |
| Taurus | 4th house | Home, family, roots, where you live |
| Gemini | 3rd house | Communication, learning, siblings, your local world |
| Cancer | 2nd house | Money, earnings, self-worth |
| Leo | 1st house | You: body, image, a new chapter |
| Virgo | 12th house | Rest, endings, what happens behind the scenes |
| Libra | 11th house | Friends, networks, long-term goals |
| Scorpio | 10th house | Career, reputation, public role |
| Sagittarius | 9th house | Travel, study, beliefs, publishing |
| Capricorn | 8th house | Shared money, debt, intimacy, transformation |
| Aquarius | 7th house | Partnerships and close relationships |
| Pisces | 6th house | Work routines, health, daily habits |
Don't know your Rising sign? The rising sign calculator finds it from your birth time. Without a birth time, read the table with your Sun sign; that is a rough guide, not a reading.
The effect is usually stronger if the eclipse falls close to a planet or angle in your own chart, within a few degrees of 10° Leo, or of 10° Aquarius on the opposite side. People with the Sun, Moon, Rising sign or Midheaven near those degrees tend to feel it most. That is the part a personal chart shows and a table cannot.
The sky around it
The eclipse does not happen alone:
- Jupiter enters Virgo on 26 July 2027 (UTC), a week before the eclipse. The Leo chapter closes as Jupiter's Virgo year opens. See Jupiter in Virgo 2027.
- Saturn and Neptune are both in Aries for the whole of 2027, and Uranus is in Gemini. Both signs make a supportive angle to Leo, which astrologers tend to read as momentum rather than friction.
All three statements come from this site's ephemeris.
How to use the eclipse
- Find the house first. The table names the area of life. Write down what is already changing there.
- Don't force a launch on the day. Many astrologers suggest watching rather than acting on the eclipse itself, and starting in the weeks that follow, once the direction is clear.
- Look back six months later. Note what began around August 2027 and check in early 2028. Eclipses are often easier to read in hindsight.
- Look at your own chart. If the eclipse touches one of your planets, the theme will be personal and louder.
Frequently asked questions
When is the total solar eclipse in 2027?
On Monday 2 August 2027. The New Moon is exact at 10:05 UTC; local eclipse times depend on where you watch.
Where is the 2027 eclipse visible?
Totality crosses southern Spain (parts of Cádiz and Málaga), Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. A partial eclipse is visible far beyond that path.
How long does totality last?
Up to about 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor in Egypt, and about 4 minutes 39 seconds at Tarifa in Spain. It is the longest totality over land between 1991 and 2114.
Is it safe to look at the eclipse?
Only with certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) or a proper solar filter, except during the minutes of totality itself. Never use ordinary sunglasses.
What sign is the August 2027 eclipse in?
Leo, at 9°55′.
What does a solar eclipse in Leo mean?
Astrologers read it as a new beginning around self-expression, creativity, love and visibility, centred on the house Leo rules in your chart.
Which signs are most affected?
Leo and Aquarius (the eclipse and its opposite point), then Taurus and Scorpio. But the strongest effect comes from where it falls in your own chart, not from your Sun sign alone.
Is an eclipse a bad omen?
No. Astrology reads it as a turning point, not a verdict. What changes depends on the part of life it touches and on what you choose to do.
Where a personal reading goes further
A table by Rising sign shows the area of life. It cannot tell you whether the eclipse sits on one of your own planets, which months of the following half year matter most, or how it fits with Saturn and Neptune in Aries and Jupiter's new year in Virgo. That is what your own chart shows.
