The 12 houses in astrology: what each house means in your birth chart

Signs tell you how, planets tell you what, and houses tell you where: which part of life each planet acts in. All twelve houses explained, plus empty houses and house systems.

A birth chart has three layers. Planets are what is acting: love, drive, thinking. Signs are how it acts: boldly, carefully, playfully. Houses are where: which area of your life it plays out in. Two people with Venus in Leo can live it very differently if one has it in the 10th house of career and the other in the 4th house of home.

This guide explains what the twelve houses are, how they are calculated, what each one means, and what to do with empty houses.

What are the houses in astrology?

The houses divide the sky around your birthplace into twelve sections, starting from the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. The first section begins at your Rising sign (the Ascendant), and the houses run counter-clockwise around the chart. Each one stands for a part of life: self, money, communication, home and so on.

Because the houses depend on the Ascendant, you need your birth time and place to know them. Without a birth time, the signs and aspects of your planets are still accurate, but their houses are not.

The four angles

Four points anchor the houses:

  • Ascendant (start of the 1st house): you, how you arrive
  • IC (start of the 4th): roots, home, private life
  • Descendant (start of the 7th): partners and others
  • Midheaven or MC (start of the 10th): career, reputation, public life

Planets near these angles act strongly and visibly.

What does an empty house mean?

There are ten main planets and twelve houses, so every chart has empty houses. An empty house does not mean that area of life is missing. It means it is not a main focus, or that it works more quietly. To read an empty house, look at the sign on its cusp and where that sign's ruler sits. An empty 7th house in Libra, for example, is read through Venus.

Which house system should I use?

There are several ways to divide the houses.

  • Placidus is the most common in modern Western astrology and the default in our free birth chart. It divides by time, so houses can be uneven in size.
  • Whole Sign gives each house one whole sign, starting from the Rising sign. It is the oldest system and very simple to read.

Both are valid. Near the poles Placidus cannot be calculated, and our chart then switches to Porphyry and says so. Pick one system and stay with it while you learn.

How to read the houses in your chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Rising sign calculator or your full chart.
  2. See which houses hold planets. Those areas of life carry more of your story.
  3. Notice crowded houses. Three or more planets in one house (a stellium) point to a big theme.
  4. Read the planet, sign and house together. "Mars in Capricorn in the 10th" is drive (Mars), disciplined and patient (Capricorn), in career (10th).
  5. Follow transits through the houses. When a slow planet like Jupiter or Saturn moves through a house, that area of life is active. Our guide to Jupiter in Virgo 2027 shows how.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my birth time to know my houses?

Yes. The houses come from the Ascendant, which changes about every two hours.

What is the most important house?

The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th (the angular houses) tend to be the most visible, but importance depends on where your planets are.

What if my houses look different on another website?

Usually the house system is different (Placidus vs. Whole Sign), or the birth time is slightly different. Check both.

What does the 12th house mean?

Rest, solitude, the unconscious and behind-the-scenes work. Planets here often work privately or show later in life.

What does having many planets in one house mean?

That area of life is a strong focus. Astrologers call three or more planets in one house a stellium.

Do houses change over time?

Your natal houses do not. What changes is which houses the transiting planets are passing through.

Where a personal reading goes further

A table of houses tells you what each area of life means. A reading tells you which of your houses are doing the most work, where your chart ruler sends you, and which houses this year's transits are activating, so you know where to put your energy now.

The Soul Blueprint reads your whole chart, houses included; the Annual Personal Algorithm follows the transits through your houses month by month. Each is computed first, then read line by line and signed by Mr. Tanker, the founder of Soul Glow AI.

Your next step

  1. Draw your birth chart for free and see which houses your planets sit in.
  2. Ask Mr. Tanker for your free 12-month reading, with the year's transits placed in your houses.
  3. Go back to the beginning with how to read a birth chart.
